The AP News reports that Vietnam has discovered a new coronavirus variant that’s a hybrid of strains first found in India and the U.K.

Quoting Vietnamese health official, the Associated Press (AP) reports that a new Coronavirus variants that’s hybrid of strains found in India and the UK has been discovered in Vietnam.

Nguyen Thanh Long, the Vietnamese health minister, told the AP News that “scientists examined the genetic makeup of the virus that had infected some recent patients, and found the new version of the virus. He said lab tests suggested it might spread more easily than other versions of the virus. The new variant could be responsible for a recent surge in Vietnam, which has spread to 30 of the country’s 63 municipalities and provinces.”

According to the AP News, though Vietnam standout initially in battling coronavirus, however recent spike in cases suggested that the pandemic is not over yet.

“Most of the new transmissions were found in Bac Ninh and Bac Giang, two provinces dense with industrial zones where hundreds of thousands of people work for major companies including Samsung, Canon and Luxshare, a partner in assembling Apple products. Despite strict health regulations, a company in Bac Giang discovered that one fifth of its 4,800 workers had tested positive for the virus,” reports the AP News.

“Vietnam has since ordered a nationwide ban on all religious events. In major cities, authorities have banned large gatherings, closed public parks and non-essential business including in-person restaurants, bars, clubs and spas.”

Coronavirus-19 vaccination watch

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) COVID vaccination tracker page (as of May 29, 9 a.m.) 366,314,625 doses have been distributed and 293,705,050 doses administered. According MDH COVID-19 Response vaccine data (as of May 27) a total of 5,266,811 doses of Covid-19 (Pfizer & Moderna) vaccines have been administered in Minnesota. According to the MDH latest tally (as of May 29) the confirmed COVID-19 cases in Minnesota are 601,105 (out of 9,930,030 tested) with 7,418 deaths.
