Claude 2, a reported ChatGPT competitor, from Anthropic was lunched recently its most powerful public beta claude.ai. According to CNBC, the company was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI research executives and funded by companies including Google, Salesforce and Zoom.
“Anthropic, which was founded two years ago by former OpenAI research executives, debuted its new AI chatbot called Claude 2, and invited the public to use it. The company has raised $750 million in two funding rounds since March, and was valued at $4.1 billion,” CNBC writes.
Daniela Amodei, who co-founded Anthropic with her brother, Dario, told CNBC “We have been focused on businesses, on making Claude as robustly safe as possible. We really feel that this is the safest version of Claude that we’ve developed so far, and so we’ve been very excited to get it into the hands of a wider range of both businesses and individual consumers.”
According its website, claude 2 excels at a wide range of tasks from sophisticated dialogue and creative content generation to detailed instruction. Its said to be good in (i) complex reasoning, (ii) creativity, (iii) thoughtful dialogue, (iv) coding, and (v) detailed content creation.
Dr Andrew Rogoyski of the Institute for People-Centred AI at the University of Surrey in England, told the Guardian “I like to think of Anthropic’s approach bringing us a bit closer to Asimov’s fictional laws of robotics, in that it builds into the AI a principled response that makes it safer to use”.
“It’s a really unusual time from a business perspective because there’s just so much demand for large language models and really more demand than the industry can currently provide. The landscape is just very wide, and there’s really quite a lot of room for many different users and types of users to make use of these systems,” Amodei told CNBC.
Hands-on testing
I tried out the new Claude 2 chatbot by signing up on the site. I was surprised that I got access, even though there was a 35K-waiting list.
During my test, the chatbot made several mistakes and a lot of things were fabricated. When I challenged the bot about making things up, and it was not ready to take up the task yet, it apologized sincerely. When I compared of the identical content and task between the two, the ChatGPT performed better at summarizing or paraphrasing a block of content.
“There are just so many remaining unknown unknowns but also known challenges with all language models in the world today,. No language model is 100% immune from hallucinations, and Claude 2 is the same,” Amodei told CNBC
In contrast to the ChatGPT, the Cloude chatbot was capable of accessing GitHub content and incorporating relevant reference into related sentences. That was cool. The prompt input box also accepts a larger piece of content (75,000 words) as a text file, in contrast to ChatGPT, which only accepts 3000 words.
