Covid Vaccine Mandates Sweep the US

Government mandates are not popular among Americans especially in medicine. Many Americans believe that ‘medicating people against their will violates a longstanding principle of individual freedom dear to every right-thinking patriot’.

Our revolt against King George saw the aborning nation’s first inoculation mandate when General Washington ordered his troops immunized against smallpox.

Vaccines Mandates are Lawful

Lawrence O. Gostin, a university professor and faculty director of the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University Law Center, writes in the Scientific American OpEd that vaccine mandates are lawful.

Despite some public concerns and political disputes about vaccine mandates, Pres. Biden recently mandated vaccinations for all federal workers and contractors, ordered the military to move toward compulsory vaccinations, while the Department of Veterans Affairs issued mandates for all frontline health workers at its facilities.

Vaccines are Popular

In the Brookings, William A. Galston writes that vaccines are popular than we think. According to a recent Kaiser Family Foundation survey “unvaccinated adults are much less worried about the coronavirus (including the delta variant) than are the vaccinated and have less confidence in the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines”.

Solid majorities of every racial and ethnic group support vaccine mandates, as do Americans at all levels of age, income, and education.

Economist/YouGov survey

Galston writes “Political divisions on this issue have not magically vanished. Only 45% of Republicans support vaccine mandates, compared to 84% of Democrats”.

There might not be official Government Covid vaccine mandates to American, but large employers across corporate America are stepping into the void, writes CNBC. Many states are requiring their employee to either get vaccinated or get frequently tested for Covid infection.

Gostin writes “California, New York City and New York State are leading the way in requiring that government workers get vaccinated or else submit to weekly testing. Meanwhile more hospitals and long-term care facilities are implementing mandates following a joint statement from 100 medical and nursing groups urging compulsory vaccinations.”

Vaccine Mandates Sweep Corporate America

Robert Towey and Leslie Josephs write in the CNBC “Covid vaccine mandates sweep across corporate America as delta variant spurs action.”

They write that more than a dozen large U.S. corporations, including Walmart, Google, Tyson Foods and United Airlines, have recently announced vaccine mandates for some or all of their workers.
