Dangerous winter storm with almost a feet of snow with bone-chilling sub-zero temperatures and up-to -50F wind chill is sweeping across the US. In our location, we got almost 7-inch of snow on Wednesday and day-time high temp of -4F and zero on Thursday-Friday.
According to the CNN, its not only in the Minnesota (where we are used to cold & snow), but its the rest of the country where most people haven’t experienced such a brutal weather for a long time. The following summary from the CNN:
- Millions under alerts: More than 100 million people across the US are under winter weather and wind chill alerts as a major winter storm is expected to bring what the National Weather Service is calling a “once in a generation type event.”
- Flights canceled: More than 2,000 flights have been canceled so far across the US.
- “Life-threatening” wind chill: The Midwest will see more than a foot of snow and possible blizzard conditions, as the weather service warns of “life-threatening” wind chills for millions.
- Coldest Christmas: The cold will stick around for Christmas weekend, making this the coldest Christmas in roughly 40 years for portions of the Plains and Midwest.
MPR News writes “The first part to affect Minnesota — the snow — had largely ended Thursday, with accumulations of more than a half-foot reported in some locations, including 8.1 inches at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Parts of the North Shore reported a foot of snow”.
Quoting The National Weather Service Twin Cities office, MPR News writes: it warned that “many hours of whiteout conditions are expected during that time with travel becoming very difficult or impossible as roads drift shut. In addition, arctic air with dangerously cold wind chills will spread across the region. This event could be life-threatening if you are stranded, with wind chills in the 30 below to 45 below zero range.”
