Frontier Model Forum for AI Regulation

Four of the major tech companies (Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Antropic) that are involved in the development of generative AI modules are said to have agreed to form a Frontier Model Forum, an industry body “to oversee safe development of the most advanced models“, the Guardian reports.

Brad Smith, the president of Microsoft, told the Guardian “Companies creating AI technology have a responsibility to ensure that it is safe, secure, and remains under human control. This initiative is a vital step to bring the tech sector together in advancing AI responsibly and tackling the challenges so that it benefits all of humanity.”

Quoting forum members the Guardian writes that the objective of the forum is “to promote research in AI safety, such as developing standards for evaluating models; encouraging responsible deployment of advanced AI models; discussing trust and safety risks in AI with politicians and academics; and helping develop positive uses for AI such as combating the climate crisis and detecting cancer”.

“This is urgent work,” said Anna Makanju, OpenAI’s vice president of global affairs.

The Frontier Model Forum currently has only four members, but it is said that they are open to new members, as long as demonstrate a “strong commitment to frontier model safety.”

In a joint statement, the companies wrote “We plan to consult with civil society and governments in the coming weeks on the design of the Forum and on meaningful ways to collaborate.”
