Groundhog Day Weather Predictions

To-day is Groundhog day, a US Christian tradition of over 120 years, predicts there is still six more weeks of winter.

Crowds showed up this morning to watch as Punxsutawney Phil came out of his “burrow,” only to see … his shadow on 2-2-22. As the legend has it, that means six more weeks of winter weather. This is Phil the groundhog’s has been forecasting the weather on Groundhog Day for more than 120 years, but just how good is he at his job?

Not very, it turns out.

It appears that, there is also another weather predictions tradition out of New York. “In New York, Charles G. Hogg — aka Staten Island Chuck — emerged from his burrow to see no shadow and an early spring” writes NPR News.

Both have long histories and mixed track records when it comes to predicting the weather. While Punxsutawney Phil’s handlers — a group of top hat-clad gentlemen known as the Inner Circle — say he’s always right (and that he is the “only true weather forecasting groundhog”), data from the Stormfax Almanac puts that number closer to 39%. The Staten Island Zoo says its star groundhog has an 85% accuracy rate.

Based not their track records, we shouldn’t abandon our regular weatherman’s daily forecast yet!
