Recent Covid Surge and Vaccine Hesitancy

In the Politico Magazine, Natasha Korecki writes while profiling a community of Osage Beach, Missouri that the unvaccinated community party-hard but still reluctant to get vaccinated.

At the Lake of the Ozarks, vaccines are shunned, masks are mocked and the long-term consequences take a back seat to the time at hand.

Writing about Erin, a bartender in the beach bar, Korecki highlight the the fact that the county is “designated a Covid hot spot, in a state with one of the lowest vaccination rates in the nation, and in a region where hospitals are nearing capacity as the Delta variant takes hold, a bartender at Backwater Jack’s, couldn’t be in a more vulnerable position”.

I’m living, breathing proof—I’ve not been sick once. I’ve been as hands-on as you can be with people from everywhere. Personally, I feel like my immune system is doing a good job, so why pump it full of something that we don’t really know what it is?

People at the beach that Korecki interviewed told her “No promise would entice them to voluntarily get vaccinated, not a $1 million check, or a plea from a loved one, or the encouragement of Donald Trump himself.”. A few who had vaccinated told her that they were shamed by friends and families.

The beach loving community members told Korecki that they are suspicious of pandemic media coverage, suspect the greedy pharmaceutical companies and questions government’s free vaccination program. “Now why would they be giving it away for free? .. If you think you can trust your government, ask the Native Americans,” told one customer at the bar.

All this bullshit about people getting sick, look around, See any masks here in Missour-ah? Not one. Is anybody getting sick? No. They’re full of shit on the left.

Despite the people’s resistance to get vaccinated and increasing incidence Delta variants in unvaccinated community like Osage Beach (MO), health experts believe that vaccination is central to the ending of the pandemic.

The bottom line is the masks will help us reduce spread further, but the vaccinations remain the bedrock of ending this pandemic.

“What’s really important, also, is to say what has not changed. And what has not changed is that vaccines still work. They still save lives. They still prevent hospitalizations at a remarkably high rate,” Dr. Murthy told CNN

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, reportedly told NPR PBS program “If we had the overwhelming proportion of the people vaccinated, we would not be having this conversation. We are dealing with an evasive type of a virus. It evolves. People need to understand. It’s a painful realization, but it’s true. We’re dealing with a virus that’s a wily character.”

Gregg Keller, a Political consultant in Missouri told Korecki “The irony is it’s not the dumb rubes in Missouri who don’t understand the nature of this disease. Missourians understand this far better than these supposed medical experts we’ve been giving tens of millions of dollars every year.”
