This recent article in Stylist magazine discusses setting boundaries, which is not easy for many, but it is essential for our emotional well-being.

Establishing boundaries is a powerful tool that helps us navigate uncomfortable situations with friends, families and colleagues. By setting clear rules and being patient, we take care of ourselves, set realistic goals, and teach others how to treat us well. This helps us feel physically and mentally.

The Stylist article quotes an Instagram post by Nawal Mustafa, aka The Brain Coach, who says “Boundaries are a way for us to honour our needs, set realistic expectations, and teach others how to treat us. They are a form of self-care and self-love that allow us to protect our energy and psychological health.”

Mustafa suggests setting the following 8 types of boundaries for our well-being:

  • Physical Boundaries: Physical boundaries includes our own personal space, how we touch things, and what we do with our bodies. They involve saying how comfortable you are and setting limits to keep others from commenting on our appearance.
  • Emotional Boundaries: It can be difficult to maintain emotional boundaries, especially when dealing with others’ emotional burden or sensitive topics. Nonetheless, prioritizing our emotional well-being is essential. Saying things like “I want to support you, but I have too much on my plate right now” or “I don’t have the emotional capacity to discuss politics,” lets us to reclaim our emotional space.
  • Communication Boundaries: Communication boundaries are vital in all areas of life, whether it’s at work or in our personal relationships. We need to address our worries about how others talk to us and set limits on how we talk to ourselves. By clearly expressing what is acceptable or unacceptable, such as not liking a certain tone or asking for respectful conversation, we create an environment that respects our communication boundaries.
  • Financial Boundaries: Money matters can be uncomfortable, especially with friends and family, but it’s essential to establish financial boundaries in today’s economic climate. It is essential to communicate our limits without guilt or embarrassment.
  • Mental Boundaries: Setting mental boundaries with ourselves is often forgotten, but it’s important to accept our own thoughts, beliefs, and opinions, even if others disagree. By keeping these limits, we become more confidence, which helps us to assert our own ideas without seeking approval.
  • Time Boundaries: Setting time boundaries is essential for prioritizing self-care and personal growth. It involves managing the amount of time spent with others and ensuring that our time is respected. By communicating availability, expressing the need for focused work or personal time, and declining invitations that don’t align with our priorities, we establish effective time boundaries.
  • Energy Boundaries: When we focus on others need instead of our own, we can feel tired emotionally. We must acknowledge how others affect out emotional well-being. When relationships too dependent or tangled up, it’s important to set firmer boundaries to keep our emotions safe and create healthier relationships.

Happy setting boundaries!!
