Anyone who regularly browses news headlines has probably come across the social media slang and ever-expanding vocabulary built around the suffix “-maxxing”—from looksmaxxing and tokenmaxxing to countless other variations. I’ve written about a few of them myself.
The Merriam-Webster lists several examples of how “-maxxing” is used, including hour-maxxing, fertility-maxxing, looksmaxxing, statusmaxxing, vaxmaxxing, and Gadaffi-maxxing.
So, what exactly does “-maxxing” mean?
Merriam-Webster defines the suffix as referring to the practice of making an act or activity as effective and fruitful as possible. In everyday online usage, “-maxxing” can be attached to almost anything, turning an ordinary word into shorthand for the pursuit of maximizing or optimizing a particular aspect of life.
The term originated in gaming slang, where “max” is a shortening of “maximize.” According to Merriam-Webster, its use gained traction in online communities during the mid-2010s, particularly in terms such as looksmaxxing, which refers to efforts to improve one’s physical appearance and romantic appeal.
The usage has since expanded well beyond its original online communities and into mainstream social media. Today, “-maxxing” can be applied to almost any activity or pursuit—from sleep, fertility, and productivity to status, health, and appearance. It is often used humorously or ironically, with the suffix conveying an exaggerated or self-aware commitment to optimizing something.
In that sense, “-maxxing” has evolved from a niche piece of internet slang into a flexible word-forming pattern that can be applied to almost anything someone wants to maximize, optimize, or obsess over.
