Weaker Covid Targets Seniors in MN

Most seniors were the prime-targets of Covid related deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. Despite the fact that seniors were prioritized for the vaccination, nearly three-quarters of the COVID-19 deaths reported in the U.S. have been among people over the age of 65, ABC News reports.

Referring to the newly updated federal data, the ABC News writes “Over 90% of seniors have been fully vaccinated, but about 30% of those fully vaccinated have yet to receive their first booster shot. To date, just under 10 million Americans 65 and older have received their second booster — representing about 28.5% of those who had already received their first shot.

Health experts reportedly suggests several factors such a proportion of deaths among seniors, which may include (i) waning immunity, (ii) relatively low booster uptake compared to primary vaccination series, and (iii) general vulnerability to the virus among the group.

CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said during a meeting of the agency’s independent advisors “Only 38% of those 50 to 64 and 43% of those 65 and older have received a vaccine dose in the past six months. This leaves about 60% of older Americans without the protection they may need to prevent severe disease, hospitalization, and death. We know immunity wanes over time, and we need to do all we can now to protect those most vulnerable.”

In Minnesota, Jeremy Olson of the Star Tribune writes “Death and severe illness rates have fallen among younger adults, leaving seniors once again with a disproportionate COVID-19 burden”.

Olson writes “More than 90% of the COVID-19 deaths identified so far in May in Minnesota have been in people 65 and older — above the 66% among that population in December, when delta and earlier omicron variants took an elevated toll on younger, unvaccinated adults. The last time more than 90% of the state’s pandemic deaths involved seniors was December 2020, before vaccine was widely available.”
